Neighbourhood Food Collection

Help us support people facing hunger this winter by joining us for the UK’s biggest food collection.

From the 1st to 3rd December, we’re hosting a food collection with Tesco as part of the ninth Neighbourhood Food Collection.

As Caroline Ambler – Geography Student blogs

“Whether you’re a Christmas keen bean who decorates the house before December even arrives or a last minute Larry who’s buying all their presents on Christmas Eve, the festive season is a time of joy and celebration and it’ll be here before we know it…

Sadly, not everyone in Stoke-on-Trent will have the means to celebrate this year. In fact for some members of our community, Christmas will bring unbearable stress and difficulty. How can you cook a Christmas dinner when the cupboards are bare or buy your children Christmas presents when that week’s budget has been spent on energy bills?

Stoke-on-Trent Foodbank has been open for more than four years now but the need for the care and support we provide has never been greater. In the past six months alone, there has been a 10% increase in foodbank usage within our city and national foodbank charity The Trussell Trust reported that foodbank referrals across the UK are still not decreasing in number. The reality of foodbank usage and life in austerity Britain was also recently tackled with great sensitivity in Ken Loach’s award-winning film, “I, Daniel Blake”, placing foodbank usage back on the political agenda.

In order to ensure we can help those in crisis this Christmas, we need the Stoke-on-Trent community to get involved with our Christmas food collection. We’ll be at Tesco Hanley and Tesco Longton from 9am till 6pm on Thursday 1st, Friday 2nd & Saturday 3rd December, so if you’re looking for a way to give back to your city this Christmas this is the perfect opportunity! Perhaps you can spare a couple of hours to hand out our shopping lists to Tesco customers or donate some Christmas goodies yourself during your weekly shop? However you can help, we’d love you to get involved!”

Donations made to our foodbank are used to provide three-days of nutritionally balanced, emergency food to people in crisis that have been referred by frontline professional agencies such as Citizens Advice or children’s centres.

Whilst at the foodbank, clients will be welcomed, listened to and signposted to services that can provide support with the underlying causes of their crisis, helping to break the cycle of poverty.

Tesco top up customer donations by making a 20% financial contribution, so by getting involved you will not only help provide vital food for UK people experiencing crisis, but funds will help Trussell Trust foodbanks provide important support beyond food, to tackle the root causes of poverty.

We are thrilled that the UK’s largest supermarket shares our vision that no one should go hungry, and is working with us to empower local communities and fight poverty.

Will you join us to help stop UK hunger?
