VOLUNTEERS WEEK | As part of Volunteers Week 2021, Alan tells us about his new role in Saltbox’s Money Matters service 🙂 #volunteersweek2021 #volunteersweek
———–
Q: Alan, how did you hear about Money Matters?
A: Originally I’d been volunteering for CareLink, also associated with Saltbox, for three to four years. I’d do befriending calls on a Tuesday morning, talking to elderly people who need a bit of a lift. This has been especially pertinent during the pandemic… people have been lonely …you give them a call and it cheers them up. I’d heard about Money Matters through Swan Bank Foodbank and Number 11 where I’d also been a helper. Lastly, I’d also been studying with Citizens Advice to gain knowledge of benefits – this was especially helpful for a role in Money Matters.
Q: What have you been doing as a volunteer with Money Matters?
A: All sorts of things! One of the first tasks I did was help someone with their PIP claim, as it had been turned down initially, so she was not receiving the benefits needed to run a mobility car. I got her on the phone and went through everything on the form and put through a mandatory reconsideration on her behalf. Application forms can be complicated, especially when people are struggling with debt and difficult circumstances. Fortunately, at Money Matters we can take the time to help them out.
Q: What would you say about your experience volunteering with the Money Matters team?
A: I have really enjoyed every minute of volunteering at Money Matters. You can really help people who are struggling. The clients let me know they appreciate my support and I feel like a valued part of the team.
